Concord 7th-graders learn about potential careers

More than 400 seventh-grade Concord Junior High School students had the opportunity Thursday, April 18, to learn about careers ranging from masonry to nursing and information technology to firefighting.

Career Quest, a two-day event, was supported by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s Skill UP Indiana! grant. The event was designed to bring awareness to careers in Elkhart County and surrounding communities. Horizon Education Alliance organized this year’s inaugural event which was held at Center Six One Five in Elkhart.

Business owners and representatives from across the area participated in the event, which was divided into three major industry sectors: Advanced manufacturing, construction and trades, and health care, with information technology immersed in the health care sector.

Curriculum was designed by school counselors to prepare the students in the classroom prior to the event, and pre- and post- surveys will be taken to track the success of the program, according to Horizon Education Alliance organizers.
