As the newest member of the Concord School Board, Kelly Barr is enthusiastic about supporting Concord Community Schools as staff prepare students for successful futures.
Barr was elected to the Concord School Board in November 2018.
A graduate of Concord High School, Barr attended Concord Ox Bow and Concord West Side elementary schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education and an associate’s degree in early childhood education from Indiana University South Bend.
Barr is a member of the Builder’s Association of Elkhart County, where she serves on the Parade of Homes Committee. She is also a member of the Concord Music Association Board.
She was born and raised in Elkhart and has lived in the Concord Community Schools district for more than 15 years.
She and her husband, Bryan, are the owners of Square 1 Builders in Elkhart, where Barr serves as the office manager. They have two daughters: Courtney, a senior at Concord High School, and Samantha, a sophomore at Concord High School.
Barr previously worked as the director of children’s ministry at Waypoint Community Church, a teacher at Hively Avenue Preschool while attending IUSB, and as a second-grade teacher at Concord East Side.
During her time at Concord East Side, Barr said she “received great mentoring, had amazing collaboration with co-workers and learned that as a teacher you do much more than just teach.”
While her daughters were at Concord East Side, Barr served as PTO president and a classroom volunteer.
It was through these experiences that Barr developed a passion for serving students.
“I believe that all children learn differently and it’s critical that we meet them where they’re at. Their academic achievement should not be solely based on standardized test scores, there are many things that should be factored in to determining their true success as a student. Their success is not just reliant on the teachers, but also the parents, families and community to work together to support and enrich the lives of the children.”
